Pro-Choice and Abortion

Pro-choice generally refers to the view that a woman should be able to retain individual control over the decisions relating to abortion and fertility.  Pro-choice is a description of a wide ethical stand point that also has political implications and practical considerations relating to the right to continue or terminate a pregnancy.  The issues surrounding the ethics of abortion are debated strongly on both sides, with both the pro-choice and pro-life camps arguing emphatically for their causes.  For advocates of the pro-choice view, it is only the individual woman who has been affected by a pregnancy who has the right to make any choices regarding the continuation or termination of her pregnancy.

Pro-choice advocates believe strongly that peoples' lives are improved when women have the right and the resources to have abortions in a legal and safe environment.  Pro-choice supporters have a wide variety of beliefs about abortion, with some advocates being totally and surprisingly against abortion from an ethical standpoint.  All pro-choice supporters do, however, have a belief that any type of ban on abortion would be bad for womens' health, and that more illegal abortions would result if women were not able to choose for themselves how to deal with their pregnancy.  Pro-choice is just that - pro-choice, and should not in any circumstances be confused with pro-abortion.
